Script Recording

One of the really cool new tools in Paint Shop Pro 8 is scripting. There are a couple ways to create scripts in Paint Shop Pro 8. Scripts are used to automate tasks that are repetitive. For instance, if I have an effect that I've created using a few different tools and I know I'd like to use that effect on other images, I could create a script that would record my actions and I'd be able to save that information for later use.

Scripting in Paint Shop Pro 8 can be done with the script recorder or you can write your own if you know the Python programming language. The easiest way of course is just by recording your actions and saving them as a script for later use.

I've chosen the picture below to create an effect on. I will record my actions and then apply those actions to my image.

The first thing you need to do is get the script tool bar showing. Go to View>Toolbars>Script.

To record, you use the button with the circle on it.

To stop recording and save the script, you use the square button on the end of the toolbar.

A dialog will open and you can name and save your script. The default folder that opens for the Save As dialog is Scripts-Restricted. You don't want to save your script there because it won't run. You need to browse to the Scripts-Trusted folder and save your script there.

You'll then be able to use the drop down to load your newly created script.

Use the blue arrow button to play the script.

On the right side of the interface you'll see the Script Output window. This tells you everything your script has done when played.

The final image is below. I can now add this effect to anything I want quickly and easily and I don't have to remember settings, sequences or anything but where to find my script and the name of it.

Script recording in Paint Shop Pro 8 makes it easy to create many, many unique effects and save them for later use. Have fun!
