Carving

This tutorial will show you how to create a carved in effect. I've used text here but you could use other objects and shapes as well.

Start by creating a new image 400 x 200.

From the Styles palette choose the pattern fill. Once it is selected you will see a default fill style. Click on that to open the fill style palette. For this tutorial I've chosen the Dead Wood fill style.

Using the Flood Fill tool, make sure your pattern is showing in the style palette, fill your image by clicking anywhere inside it.

Select the text tool from the tools palette and type in the text you want to use. From the style palette choose a pattern fill style and choose the same fill as you did for the background.

Go to Effects>3D Effects>Cutout

Use the settings shown below.

You should now have something that resembles the image below.

Go to Effects>3D Effects>Drop Shadow.

Use the settings shown below.

You should now have an image that resembles the one below.

Because we used the same fill for the text as we did for the background and we set the opacity to 75, we can see the pattern of the fill. The white drop shadow highlights the cutout effect to give the appearance of a carved effect.

If you were to use an object, you would follow the same instructions without using text.
