Lightwave 3D

Lightwave 3D is an awesome and very, very powerful 3D modeling and animation tool. It is extremely easy to use. The learning curve is very small and the tutorials included along with tutorials all over the net will get you up to speed quickly while creating terrific models and animations.

Below are the screenshots of the main interfaces as Lightwave 3D is actually two seperate programs. The first is Lightwave Modeler 7.5, the second is Lightwave 3D 7.5.

From first opening the package and installing Lightwave I was in awe of all the things it is capable of doing right out of the box. No plug-ins or add-ons to get the minute you install it.

Caustics in LightWave 3D give light reflection and refraction. A caustic appears when light reflects off a curved surface or refracts through a transparent surface so that it is focused on a small area.

Digital Confusion is a Depth of Field filter included in LightWave which gives traditional depth of field control. It renders hidden geometry for accurate background blurring. You can also select a reference object from the Autofocus menu to automatically compute the proper focal distance.

Getting around in the Lightwave 3D interface was easy and modeling was a joy. All the tools necessary are at your fingertips.

The quality of finished models and their renders along with animations created in Lightwave 3D or top notch.

No matter what I did in the software, I never encountered a crash, slowdown or hiccup of any kind. I never thought throughout the time I was using Lightwave, "I wish it had..." or "I wish it did...".

Lightwave 3D comes with a very large manual that covers it all in a no nonsense, right to the point way. The instructions are easy to follow and make learning not so confusing. The writing is clear and concise which you know is a treasure if you've come across the many manuals for other software that only confuse you more than help you. This manual is packed with information, tips and tricks.

I really enjoy the simplicity created by having two interfaces. Nothing feels cludged together or cramped and crowded. The design of the interface of both applications is awesome. I like the tab windows for moving around.

SkyTracer2 allows you to create awesome atmospheric effects that look real world. Skies can be rendered volumetrically or as a 2D effect.

Motion Mixer allows you to animate in a non linear manner.

I've included a features lists from the Newtek site below as I don't want to have anything left out.

I don't want to leave you with the idea that you'll open Lightwave and be a 3D king or queen tomorrow (unless of course you're already one today). What I do want you to know is that of the 3D modeling tools out there Lightwave is a the top of the list for quality and the complexity of things that can be done with it. It is a professional tool for professional people. Don't let the simplicity of the interface fool you. Lightwave is and does all that and more!
