3ds max 6
3ds max has just gotten better! Enhancements include changes to the User Interface, Scene Management, Modeling, Materials, Animation and Rendering. 3ds max has it all and if that's not enough for you, check out all the plug-ins created just for 3ds max.
Below is a screenshot of the main interface. Everything is laid out in a well planned manner making it easy to learn and easy to use. I didn't notice any anomalies in the interface when moving the mouse around quickly in larger projects and as a matter of fact, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary while working in 3ds max. The software seems stable no matter what I put it through.
Support for DirectX 9 has been added to this version.
Some New Features in version 6
Schematic View
Schematic View has been completely overhauled. Schematic View is a node-based scene graph that gives you access to object properties, materials, controllers, modifiers, hierarchy and non-visible scene relationships. You can also load background images and load and save setups.
Particle Flow
Particle Flow is an event driven node-based particle system. It is also exposed to the SDK and MAXScript
Vertex Paint
With Vertex Paint you can resize brushes, apply new coloring or tint levels, and paint surface friction and damage values right onto the model. A great attribute for game artists. You can animate Vertex Color Opacity.
mental ray® 3.2
mental ray 3.2 is now fully integrated into 3ds max 6 with up to 2 processor per license
Dynamic Shader UI
The .FX shader parameter is an editable parameter in the Material Editor
Network Render to Texture
Texture Baking tasks can now be deployed across your entire farm of computers.
Network Region Render
Allows portions of an image to be deployed across up to 9,999 free render nodes per copy of max
Spline/Patch Modeling
Create Cross Sections and Spline Cages without additional modifiers. Edit Patch automatically builds a patch surface. New tools include Reset Tangents, automatic Patch Smoothing, a Handle Sub-Object mode, Extrude Spline and faster Viewport performance.
Relax UV's
Relax UV's takes any selection of mapping coordinates and makes them evenly spaced.
Mirror Skin Weights
You can assign skin weighting for symmetrical characters
Edit Vertex Normals
Edit Vertext Normals is now available in the base mesh as well as the Edit Normals Modifier
Shell Modifier
The Shell Modifier let you build depth in any selection of polygons
Editable Poly/Meshsmooth
Meshsmooth and Editable Poly now include Isoline display
And those are just a small number of the enhancements and new features in 3ds max 6.
3ds max 6 has lots of wonderful features and one I am really excited about is the Panoramic Exporter Utility. It creates six renderings for the point of view of the camera you select and then combines them seamlessly to create a 360 degree view of your scene.
mental ray is now standard in 3ds max 6. In previous versions it was an add on option.
3ds max comes with a huge tutorial manual that covers just about everything you need to know how to do. The tutorials were easy to follow and are backed up by example files to look at.
3ds max 6 comes with a book devoted just to all the new features included in this new version.
