Beginning Visual C++ 6 (Ivor Horton)

Ivor Horton is an awesome teacher. From the minute I picked up Beginning Visual C++ 6 I was captured by it. The first half or so of the book is easy to read and understand and Mr. Horton has a way of explaining things that really make sense.

At the end of each chapter are exercises to reinforce what you have learned. As you get towards the second half of the book things become increasingly more difficult. Even though concepts become more difficult, Mr. Horton still has the floor as he takes you through some serious programming topics.

One of the keys to the success of Mr. Hortons teaching methods is that as you read through the book you also complete projects that pertain to the topic at hand reinforcing more still the concepts he is trying to get across. 

You'll need some advanced math skills to get through the book, but if you don't have them you'll still learn a great deal. 

Another of the fantastic features of this book is that Mr. Horton doesn't just teach you Visual C++ 6 the software, he teaches things like variables, loops, programming structure and more. The book covers writing your own dlls, connecting to data sources and more. SDI(single document interface) and MDI(multi document interface) is covered as well as console applications with are used for teaching purposes for the first part of the book.

This is not a book you're going to sit down and read in a week, and probably not a month. This book is one of those you will probably always want to keep handy for reference while your stretching your Visual C++ 6 wings.

All in all I think this is a terrific book for the beginner and the intermediate Visual C++ 6 programmer.
