World Builder Professional World Builder Professional is a powerful 3D landscape creation, animation, and rendering tool. You can use it standalone or as a plug-in for 3D Studio Max, 3D Studio Viz, Lightwave 3D, or Maya NT. You can import existing landscape data or create your own simply and easily. The user interface is easy to use and understand. The software comes with plenty of libraries to get your project up and running, but, don't miss out on the extra CD's available that add even more libraries of projects and plants. Below are screenshots of the World Builder interface with all the normal 3D view ports plus the library view port. You can either drag and drop scenes included with World Builder or use the skeleton line system to create your own landscapes which is an amazing tool to use. Create complete scenes by simply drawing some lines and setting a few parameters for those lines!
As you work you can open and close the camera view port to see how your image is coming together. You can render in several different ways: bounding box, skeleton, wire frame, flat, gourard, and phong. Below is a phong shading render of a basic landscape. By adding some trees, grasses, and maybe a road or river, you can have a full scene in no time.
Below is a look at the aquariums library included with World Builder. To use any library object is a simple operation of drag and drop. You simply selection the object and drag it to a view port. You can then add whatever else you'd like in your scene. When adding plants, you can either drag and drop them into your scene or you can drag them to the area editor (shown farther down this page) and set the parameters for how those plants will grow in your scene.
Below are the property editor and the area editor. These two items allow you to set your scene up just the way you want them.
Not only can you create static scenes but World Builder has an extensive set of tools that allow you to create animations and you don't have to be an animation wizard to create terrific animations with World Builder. World Builder comes with a fairly large manual that will guide you step by step through projects that teach you all the programs capabilities. It is straight forward, well written, and extremely easy to follow. Although there are libraries included in World Builder, I highly recommend getting the Projects Library CD and the Plants Thematic Library CD. They include lots of extras that are well worth having. Projects Library CD $149.00 (US) World Builder supports these import formats: 3DS, DXF, Lightwave (MOT, LWS, LWO), USGS, VistaPro DEM and Archive. World Builder supports these export formats: 3DS, DXF, Lightwave (MOT, LWS, LWO), VRML and Archive. If you are looking to get into, or are already into 3D landscape creation and you don't have World Builder, you need it. It is the only application you will need for creating real world landscapes and animations.
The above scene was the first image I rendered in World Builder. It took just minutes to put together and render. The cliffs and hills in the background were created from one simple skeleton line.
Both of the above images were just a matter of a few choices and dragging and dropping objects included in World Builder into the scenes. And it took just a few minutes for rendering. You owe it to yourself to run over to Animatek and check out the more serious work that has been done with World Builder. Animatek truly has their stuff together. I am still astounded at how easy this very complex application is to use and how quickly it renders.
