Front Page 2000
FrontPage 2000 is a complete web site building tool. It runs is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) environment that makes it easy to create stunning web sites in a short period of time. If you are a hands on type of person you have the option of coding your site directly. The tabs at the bottom of the main interface let you quickly and easily move from normal (WYSIWYG) to HTML hand coding to a preview of what your page will look like. Set up frames, tables, lists, and forms easily and almost effortlessly.
As with the other tools in the Office 2000 suite, you don't have to start from scratch, you have the option of using one of the pre-built templates to get you started.
You can set the properties of your page easily from the Page Properties dialog including setting your meta tags.
From the view menu you have many options for how the main user interface looks and what you can access immediately. Using these views you can change global settings for a whole web site at one time instead of having to move through each page. From the navigation menu for instance you can link all your pages together by simply dragging and dropping the files in the navigation menu where you would like them. FrontPage then automatically puts navigation on all those pages for you.
FrontPage is a powerful web site building tool. You don't need to be on an IIS server to use FrontPage, however, some of the cool functions will not work on Unix servers. If you are on an IIS server, you don't have to worry about special scripts for your forms as FrontPage uses what are called bots and you can set the properties of these bots to make them suite your needs. Form bots are not the only bots in FrontPage, there are many that add interesting options for your web site.
You also have the option to use what are called borders. Borders can be the top, bottom, left, and right side of an html document. These borders are similar to the Unix version of server side includes. What this means is that if you would like the same type of information on all of your pages in a web site, or even just the pages you choose you only have to enter that information once and then set the properties for each page you want that information on as you create them.
FrontPage also includes a message board option which allows you to create your own message board in the WYSIWYG environment. You simply answer a few questions and FrontPage will create your personal message board for you. Of course, this option will only work on an IIS server.
